Start Up Problem

In past week or so, after Windows XP Home Edition starts for first time in
morning, screen collapses and goes black; sometimes make it to Internet, and
then collapses; keep trying (using F2 or F8 or pulling plug and reinserting)
and eventually start up works and PC is fine for rest of day and eve. When
start up next morning, same problem occurs. System Restore, Last Good
Configuration, Start Windows Normally haven't worked. I hesitate to try
anything too complicated, fearing may do more harm than good. Could use some
relatively simple, safe help. Thank you.

If the "screen collapses and goes black" then you have a hardware problem
unconnected with your operating system. Most monitors are set to turn off
the screen if the video in signal stops. Evidently your computer system is
failing, or your monitor is failing. One thing you can try is swapping in a
known good monitor and checking if the problem continues (this could
eliminate or confirm the monitor as the problem source.)

You should try a hardware Usenet newsgroup for more information. If you do,
you should supply a lot more information about age of system, description of
system, and any recent hardware changes.
