XP Spooler 7034 failure

I'm getting a continuing failure that the Print Spooler
has terminated unexpectedly, with a 7034 code
(EVENT_SERVICE_CRASH_NO_ACTION). When it happens, my
local printers are no longer visible under control panel
and I can't install a new one.

Executable is C:\WINDOWS\system32\spoolsv.exe. When I
manually restart the service under Service Manager, it
appears to run until I try to install a printer, and
which point the service stops with a 7034. I'm unable to
find further helpful data on the microsoft databases.

Does anyone have any experience with this?
