Print Spooler Errors

S

Stephen @ ZennHAUS

Hi guys

Have an Acer laptop running Windows Vista with all current updates installed
including SP1. The last 10 days, the Print Spooler service fails. It starts
no problem, but shortly after it fails, restarts, fails again etc until the
service control policy stops it and notifies the user. The error messages
it gives do not offer any information nor any further online information
about what could be the problem. It is a stand alone machine with a
wireless connection via an ADSL router/modem to the internet. The errors
that show up in the even logs are 7031 and 7034 with no specific detail and
there are no other errors in the logs relating to the print spooler or
printing.

If anyone can shed some light on this I would be grateful.

How are you connected to the printer?

Most spooler failures are caused by print drivers performing invalid
functions and corrupting the process memory of the spooler.

Is there a pending print job that starts "printing"? Look in
\windows\system32\spool\printers

the spool files are the spl file that contains the data of the job and the
shd file that contains information about which printer to send the spl file.

If you have these files move them (or delete them if they are not needed)
and start the spooler.

if that does not work you'll most likely need to delete and reinstall the
print driver. Be sure to run the vendor uninstall program if you ran a
setup program when initially adding the printer. If the printer is a
Lexmark be sure to follow the special Lexmark steps.

Thanks Alan. I never thought of service dependencies being an issue with
Lexmark. Didn't even know the user had installed one. All the more reason to
get a Canon.

Lexmark has some great Laser printers.

My mother always said if you don't have something nice to say....

Glad you got it figured out.
