XP SP2 - On Restart - hangs at "Windows is shutting down..."

When I try to "Restart" with XP SP2 my computer hangs at "Windows is shutting
down...". If I do a "Turn Off", it works fine. Any thoughts on how to
fix this.

Uninstall sp2. Then - read the list of features and determine just what is on said list that you/your system NEEDS!

WRONG!

This is made by default. It does it on my computer too.

I don't direct this at you because I empathize with ya. But - your comment makes a point that I've made here and that is that uninstalling sp2 is not a 'clean' process. Whatever it broke is still broke after it's uninstalled.

Clean OS install is what I'd do. If for no other reason than the peace of mind in knowing that NO portion of the sp2 mess is on my system.

I uninstalled SP2. System is still hanging on a Restart.

That is utterly ridiculous advise. If you can't help with a problem
don't post and turn off HTML posting when you do. How many times have
you been asked to do that?

Ignore user 1. His whole purpose, it seems, is to jump on anyone's post
who has a any type of problem post SP2 and offer no help but to blame
SP2. His only resolution is remove SP2.

As to your shutdown problem this can happen in any version of Windows
XP. See this excellent troubleshooting tool for shutdown problems.

To get a good install of SP2 make sure the system is running good with
no malware. See these links for preparation:

I have the exact same problem with my HP (a530n). Installed everything the
manufacturer requested, then installed SP2 from a Microsoft SP2 CD.
Everything appears to work fine, but the computer hangs when restart is
selected. If I turn it off, then turn it back on, it boots perfectly. The
RESTART option is the only thing that is apparently no longer working. The
screen goes black (LCD monitor) and the HD light stays constantly lit, even
though the HD is not active. A friend of mine has the exact same system with
the exact same problem. BTW, the bios has been updated and all drivers are
updated. IT IS NOT A VIDEO CARD OR MONITOR PROBLEM.

I'm really surprised that so many people are having this problem, and no
simple solution is available (yet another MS patch, or something).
Re-installing or manually modifying OS files is not a simple solution.

Can anyone help with resolving this problem?

I see allot of issues with Hewlett-Packard Desktop's and Power Mgmt.
Especially, Suspend and Hibernate functions that don't awaken properly.
It's not an easy issue to resolve. Sometimes a BIOS flash will resolve it.
Other times it takes some adjustments in BIOS setup for Power Mgmt
and on occasion it's because of poorly implement System drivers that
need a Chipset driver update.

Sorry for the multiple posts. I kept getting an error (obviously an error
with the error message, hehe) when I tried to submit and submitted it
multiple times.

See this excellent troubleshooting tool for shutdown problems.

Also try reinstalling the chipset drivers.

I have the same problem myself. I have an HP Pavilion A550E and ever
since I installed SP2, I have not been able to restart the machine,
only "turn off". I have found that if I launch Windows in Safemode
(by holding down F8 during boot up), the restart functionality works
just fine. However, if I launch the "msconfig" utility and do a
selective start up, I still see the same problem.

I scoured the web and HP's web site and have found no answers for this
problem. I called HP technical support and the answer they gave me is
to uninstall Service Pack 2. Great!!! @#$%@

Given that "restart" worked in safe mode, I am thinking that it may be
a driver issue.

Any thoughts?

Thanks,

Ken

I also have had the same problem with my HP Pavilion a550e. "Restart"
does not work but "Turn Off" does after installing SP2.

Called HP technical support and they said in order to fix this, I
needed to get rid of SP2. Great help!

If you launch Windows XP in Safe mode (hold down F8 while booting),
then restart it, it works! However, when I tried to do a selective
startup with the "msconfig" tool, that did not help.

Any ideas?

Thanks,

Ken
