Windows XP SP2 is not shutting down

Hi Guys,

Windows XP with SP2 hangs on "Windows is shutting down" and does not
shutdown untill i press the shutdown button.

When I disabled the Automatic Updates service from the control panel, the
shutdown works fine.

Is there any patch i have to apply or any workaround to do so i can enable
the Automatic Updates service again and benefit from it.

yes i am sure that it is not because when i tried to enable Automatic updates
it freezed and didnt turn on. That's y i disabled the service from the
control panel. Moreover, i was not able to access the windows panel except
from safe mode.
