XP SP2 Could not Backup Registry Key

I'm trying to install XP SP2 on a machine and when it starts backing up the
registry I receive this message for several keys: Service Pack 2 could not
backup registry key. I click ignore but it will do this for several keys. I
try to give full permissions to these keys to the local administrator but it
won't let me - access is denied. How can I solve this?

Did this problem ever get resolved? I am having the same exact problem. If it
got resolved, please send me the instructions to resolve this problem.
