xp sp2 and memory conflicts

Happy windows xp sp1 system, on an athlon 3200

Installed sp2 and then I get memory conflicts when using certain applets.

eg when I run control panel/system/device manager/hardware, I get "An
instruction at "#######" accessed memory at "######" and failed" where
"#######" is a hex address. Same message but different hex address when I
try to run regedit.
All other apps and programs run fine, but clearly I can't manage without the
device manager or regedit!

Did a system restore back to sp1 and everything is happy again.

Thought it might be bad ram, so swapped it out, and the same message, so
it's not that.

Has anyone seen this problem and resolved it?

You were being protected from a bad program.
That is the AMD 64 and SP2 DEP, NX page memory protection
feature that will not allow code to execute in data pages
or system protected memory.
You had it all and disn't know it.
All you had to do was add that program to the dep
exceptionlist.

I don't know how to do that because I don't have that
CPU but the MS knowledge base files do have it.

Try again, :)

the situation depends on having the mpegport.sys driver installed. That is
the only way for the problem to occur.

XP works with ram memory and virtual-memory,if ram chks out,R.click
my computer,properties,advanced,settings,virtual-memory,click the "change
button". Set to let windows manage, then click set 2X,close-out.If done
correctly, a computer restart pop-up will get displayed.
