XP SP1 Nav 2003 problems

Hi,

I've been trying to improve the speed of my machine as it's very slow at
present. It's a P4 1.8 Ghz Dell Dimension 4300 with 512 MB Ram.

I believe that the problem is something to do with Norton AV 2003.I've
reinstalled NAV and got all of the latest updates as well as using a
suggested update of root certificates. This now makes the NAV icon appear
very quickly, but using BootVis, it says that the boot is done in about
60seconds, but looking at the driver delays graph, the symevent.sys shows
continous delays from about 75seconds from initial boot to about 170 seconds
from initial boot with the biggest delays being about 8seconds. My Common
Client is the correct one that they recommend. The other issue is that the
CPU seems to be maxed out for almost all of this period. The first reported
service to start in the event log is the Network Location Awareness (NLA)
service, with the
second being the SymEvent. I've got a network card installed, but I'm not
connected to a network - not sure if this causes issues. My main speed
problems have occured since upgrading to SP1 and Nav2003 though. But
recently it's taking nearly three minutes before I start working!!

I've seen a few threads with these issues.

I've got several USB devices attached, but I've disabled any virtual drives
(my printer and dvdrw creates them), to try and see if they were causing a
delay (Pinanncle Instant CD/DVD is particularly slow at initialising). I
also use a Voyager 100 ASDL Modem.

I've removed the 811493 security fix and this has sped up things by about
30seconds, (Windows Update now tells me to update it!) I've re-run bootvis
and the delay is still there. I even tried creating a batch file, to try and
start things seperately (below), but that hasn't really helped either. I
also have zone alarm, but this tends not to appear until after the
symevent.sys has finished whatever it is doing. Zone Alarm is 4.5.538.001.
Could there be some sort of conflict between these two programs.

Finally, would the fact that the symevent.sys certificate only running from
Nov 2002 - Nov 2003 affect the speed at all? a bit like logging into outlook
over the web, when your company hasn't got an upto date certificate.

Any help would be much appreciated. Sorry for putting this post up again.

Thanks

The most obvious question is why don't you get a different virus scanner if
you feel NAV is impacting your system that badly.
