I have been told that an anti -virus program like Norton is no longer needed
with SP-2 installed and the firewall active. Can anyone confirm this?

Go through the following link:

Yes you will still need a 3rd party AV when using SP2 which does NOT have an
AV.

Maybe you will not need a 3rd party firewall if you choose to use the SP2
firewall.

SP-2 adds an feature that will remind you if your Anti-Virus
definitions are out of date, but that is all it does.

I wouldn't trust The SP2 "built-in" firewall alone.
Yes, I have mine enabled but I dont rely on it. I would thoroughly
recommend an additional firewall for added protection.

I've read online that you should only ever have one software firewall
running at any one time, as with two running, there can be issues that
result in a less secure system. Anybody know?

The nice think about a third-party firewall like ZoneAlarm is that one
can check and STOP MicroSoft program that try to send things too :)

Not true but it does slow down traffic a bit.

Not really advisable as the Windows Firewall only monitors inbound
connections.

I use a 3rd party firewall and not the SP2 firewall as I have been doing so
for about 3 years. I was just suggesting to Bob that he can choose between
the SP2 firewall and a 3rd party firewall.

Fair enough, Steve. All I'm suggesting is that, despite the SP2 firewall
being much improved over it's predecessor, it isn't a very good choice.
Outbound monitoring is pretty-much essential for detecting certain kinds of
spyware and trojans (that have got past other checks - probably due to
inexperience, but all the more reason to have the last newbie-friendly line
of defence, an outbound-monitoring firewall). The SP2 firewall is great
insofar as connecting with XP without any firewall will result in infection
before a 3rd-party solution can be downloaded.

Don't use Norton AntiVirus, Firewall... in fact don't use any Norton
Products at all. Good antivirus = NOD32, good firewall = ZoneAlarm.

Shane:

I agree, the SP2 firewall's failure to monitor outgoing traffic is a real
problem!

It was my 3rd party firewall which 2 years ago caught some outgoing traffic
from some spyware, and in the process of solving the problem, I was
introduced to this NG.

Yes, it was the firewall catching tsadbot trying to phone home that
introduced me to spyware. Googling tsadbot bought me to Ad-aware and I
haven't had spyware since!

Shane:

I need to correct myself, it was some spyware that introduced me to
alt.privacy.spyware and not this NG. I have not had any spyware since,
although I did get hit by CWS once.

Highly recommend ZoneAlarm Security Suite 6. Has stopped all unauthorized
attempts.
