I am having the same problem and was about to post the
same question, so I'll watch this thread. Here are some
things I have done that improved the load time, but
there's still something else that needs attion:
1. Make sure that the local domain server and WINS server
are configured:
Network connection | properties | TCP/IP | Properties
2. Run MSCONFIG and make sure you want and need all of
the startup items. There's no end of trial-ware,
marketing and junk installed by the Dell an HP. You'll
have to decide on the "support" stuff. I think it is
mostly marketing/sales and available as part of Win XP.
3. Check for spy-ware and virus infections.
4. All network varieties: make sure you need to reload
all of your network connections.
I have a P3 800mhz so I don't expect it to be as fast,
but 4 +/- minutes is not right.

I need help with WIN XP. I have a 3GHz P-IV with 512
RAM and Win XP Home SP1 Laptop. The computer is about
8/12 old. After logging in, it takes ages for XP to load
up and be ready for use. I have tried defragmenting the
drive, but to no avail. Any suggestions on how to make
everything speed up a bit?
