XP shut down and reboot problems

I'm running XP Pro and sometimes I have problems shutting down. Now things
have got worse as I sometimes have trouble re-booting. I've just run
SFC.exe /scannow but this didn't flag up any problems. I always run
anti-spy and anti-virus software so my problem shouldn't be due to spyware
or a virus. I've check my security updates and I did have a problem with
KB913446 as it fail to load properly but I reinstall it and it hasn't cured
the problem.

Does anybody know if running scannow can fix things without producing a
report? If not, can anybody please help?
