XP service packs

Harryo

I would like to update my present copy of Windows XP Professional to
SP2.

Is it necessary to firstly install SP1a and then install SP2 or does
the latest service pack 2 contain all the improvements contained in
version SP1a?

I will be ordering whatever service packs I require from Microsoft in
Ireland as it takes too long to download them via my dial-up modem.

SP2 includes all previously released updates and service packs.
You will still have to download or get someone to download and burn to CD
the Post-SP2 patches.
All critical/non-critical are up to 60-ish of those.

All you need is Service Pack 2 since SP2 includes the updates included in
SP1a and also has some updated versions of files that were in SP1a.

Thank you for the advice regarding SP1a and SP2 service packs.

I will contact Ireland to order the SP2 CD and will download any other
patches directly providing they are not huge files.

Thanks for the advice, I have tried obtaining the SP2 CD from a number
of 'PC World' stores here in the UK, according to Microsoft UK the CD
is freely available from 'PC World' although all the stores I have
contacted do not have it!

After receiving an email from Microsoft UK suggesting that I could
order it online from Ireland for the sum of £6 to cover cost of
postage etc I tried to order only to be told that it could only be
ordered online.

I was given a URL which would take me to a web page so that I could
complete the order, unfortunately the page does not appear to exist!

The URL I was given has been emailed to Microsoft UK Support so will
wait and see what they say, hopefully they can advise me how to get
the CD.

Just an update to my previous messages. I have now been able to order
the SP2 CD online here in the UK.

The fault lay with me, when I had written the URL down which was
quoted to me over the phone I had missed out the letter 's' out of the
word 'downloads'.

I will include the the full URL for anyone in the UK who wishes to
order the XP SP2 CD online:-

www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/downloads/updates/sp2/cdorder/en_us/default.mspx

As mentioned previously the cost is £6 and delivery is upto 28-days.

Well, you could just go to a cybercafe with a fast internet connection
and then download the standalone SP2 installer. Its easy, just go to
Google and type it in.
And you do have to install SP1a if you are going to download SP2 from
Windows Update. But the simplest thing to do is like I said, go to a
cybercafe.

Hi, install SP2 and don't bother with any other SP's, also many PC magazines
have SP2 in their cover discs, just a matter of finding the correct one...

See WTC 15.2.06, Quote ;-

"You only need to apply SP2 since SP1 fixes are included with SP2. I
also
would consider slipstreaming SP2 into the XP install CD. So when you
install Windows XP, Service Pack 2 would be already integrated into the
OS."

- is SP1a treated differently to SP1, I wonder?.

I solved the problem by purchasing an OEM version of XP Professional
which also incorporates SP2 from my local computer shop.

It is just a case of waiting for my nephew to install it! I can build
a computer but I am at a loss when it comes to formatting the hard
drives, creating partitions and installing the operating system. :)
