Xp service pack 2 kills my sound!

After a hard drive failure, I had to reinstall XP and reload all my programs
into a new hard drives. When the updates got to service pack 2, the sound
died. This had worked previously and the driver trouble shooter claims the
device is working properly, but the only way I found to get it to work is to
not install service pack 2. What am I possibly missing?

What sound card or system? What happens after the original sound card
drivers are re-installed over SP2? If unable to do so or still fails,
what exclamation marks or questions appear over the sound devices in
Device Manager? Any error messages in Event Viewer?

I've had that happen to about 5 computers. Reinstalling the drivers has fixed
the problem on all of them.

Realtek AC97 it's built in to the motherboard which is a Gigabyte GA7400
Pro2. I have already tried the following things.

1. Uninstall and reinstall the drivers from cd.

2. Uninstall and reinstall the drivers from the licensed drivers found at
Microsoft update.

3. Wiped the hard drive completely, reloaded windows xp and the drivers,
installed all the upgrades (including driver upgrades) except service pack 2,
tested the configuration, saved a restore point, installed servicepack 2 and
it wiped out my sound and won't let me get back to my restore point.

4. Spent 2 hours 27 minutes on the phone with "John" at MS XP support and
he followed the same path of uninstalling the drivers and reinstalling them
(except he chose to use the unlicensed drivers exclusively) and then telling
me to take the machine to someone else.

I need assistance in finding an approach to this problem. The machine works
fine without service pack 2. I keep it behind a firewall and use antivirus,
antispyware, and popup blockers. Is sp2 required?
