Help to install SP-2 on XP pro

There's a lot of preparation to do before installing a service pack.
Preparation before will save you trouble later.

There's a lot of good advice on the Microsoft web site that will help
you successfully install SP 2. However, Service Pack 3 includes Service
Pack 3, so you will save yourself time by installing SP 3.

"Getting and Installing Windows XP Service Pack 2"
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/security/expert/russel_installsp2.mspx

This excerpt from the link above applies to both service packs, and
addresses your Access Denied error message.

"As another precaution, before you install SP2, you need to disable
antivirus software you're using and close any open programs. This is
always a good idea before installing new software, but it's especially
important when you're installing a service pack. And for SP2, it's
important that you disable any antivirus software especially. Some
antivirus software can interfere with the SP2 installation. To disable
the software, follow instructions from the antivirus software provider
that you use. Check the software provider's Web site for exact steps."

Whenever "Automatic Updates" clicks on, it starts to download, and install
(for my Windows XP Pro)
XP "Service Pack 2" (XP SP-2)

After a minute or so it downloads fine.
Then it starts installing it.
After about 4 mins. a sign pops up, "ACCESS DENIED"

Then it proceeds to uninstall what it was just installing. (SP-2)

I have alot of updates that need to be installed, and none of them will
install unless my computer has "Service Pack 2" already installed on it.
Such As: Internet Explorer, Windows Media Player, Safety updates, Service
Pack 3, etc....

Does anyone know why I can't get "Service Pack 2" to install on my
computer?
Whats "Access Denied" mean, and how can I fix this?

I remember a few years ago (maybe this'll have something to do with my
problem), I had a program that wouldn't run on Windows XP Pro, it needed to
have a "Fat-32" File System, so I downloaded some propiatory software, that
switched my NTFS to FAT-32. Could that be the problem? or does everyone that
uses Windows XP Pro, have it set to Fat-32?

File System "Fat-32"

Please Help

Okey Doke:
Thank you to everyone thats given me some advice on this problem
It seems that I have my work cut out for me, as I have alot of antivirus
software installed

and there seems to be a misconception out there....
No there must be somethings that SP-2 has that are not in SP-3, because,
when I went to installed SP-3 a sign popped up saying that I can't installed
SP-3 without SP-2
one other quick question....

One of the suggestions is that I should try installing SP-2 in "Safe
Mode"...
I forgot how to get into safe mode....

1)- Should I try installing SP-2 from Safe Mode
2)- How do I get into "Safe Mode" (I used to know how, so I know it's not
very hard, it's just that I've forgotten how.

Bruce

Thanks again y'all

if you are using the third party security software what you need to do is
first disable the security software then try to update

OK well, I just uninstalled all the Antivirus Software I was able to find,
and guess what?

Yep, You guessed it, it still won't let me install Windows Service Pack -
2!!! Imagine?

Any other suggestions, as to what I can do to get SP-2 installed?

Thanks
Bruce
