XP Professional SP2 - RPC Services won't start!!!

Hello.

I have a Windows XP PC, running XP Profressional SP2, an AMD 1700 processor
with two 80GB HDs, and I have a 1MB broadband (ADSL) connection via a USB
Broadband modem.

I have been trying to install a USB WiFi adapter on my PC - The new network
connection came up, but when it attempted to share my internet connection, it
failed.

A friend of mine suggested it might be because one of my RPC or Remote
Access services was not running - and when we tried to start it, an "access
denied" error appeared.

To try and remedy the problem, we booted the PC from the CD-ROM with the
Windows XP CD in the drive, and chose to repair the installation. This seemed
to hang on the first two attempts, however, on the third attempt, the
installation (repair) appeared to complete.

However, windows now takes a long time to start up, and in the event viewer,
it reports that certain services did not start. As a knock on affect, my
available internet connections do not appear, therefore I cannot connect to
the internet (I am writing this post at work).

Can anyone suggest what might have gone wrong here?

welcome to the mooon !

A couple of suggestions that might help.
With your system booted up press ctrl alt del: see if your processor is
running at 100%, it could account for the slow start up. if it is 100% go to
Start> CMD>type-msconfig> on the services tab and the startup tab see what
services are running.
If there are too many, disable all, check to see if your processor is
running at 100% now. It should boot up faster.
Your Internet connection: try unpluging the modem for 3 minnutes, when you
plug back in, see if that works.

If not, go to CMD again, type in IPCONFIG, press enter see if your IP addy
comes up, if not try IPCONFIG/RELEASE then hit enter, then type in
IPCONFIG/RENEW, hit enter
I hope this was of some hel

Thanks porciniman, but one of the first delays is actually between the point
in which the machine is booting up and showing the log in screen.

With regards to the modem, I have reinstalled the device, and am happy that
it is correctly installed, but it's the list of available dial-up options
(connections) that are missing.

Well, the 1st thing that comes to mind, why not call your IS provider and see
if they have an idea of why there are so few numbers.
I wrote my answer assuming you had cable not dialup.
Sorry.

On closer inspect, the problem was actually the "Remote Access Connection
Manager" service which would not start.

After searching for the problem for on MSDN, the solution involved deleting
two values from the registry and re-booting the machine. The problem occurs
when you run a re-install of XP apparently.

When I get home tonight I will obtain the knowledge base article and post it
in this thread.
