XP Professional does not boot

How can i repair XP professional without losing data.

I've a Compaq Evo N1050v notebook.
Running Service Pack 1

If i startup the notebook it comes up with a screen:
safe mode
safe mode with command prompt etc.

If i choose any of the above options - it comes up later
with:

missing system file - press 'r' for repair

PLEASE HELP - i need my DATA urgently

- Boot your machine with your WinXP CD.
- When prompted, select "Install", not "Repair".
- When prompted again, select your current
installation, then allow it to be repaired.
- When all is well again, review your backup
strategy. Important files must be backed up
to a different medium on a weekly basis. You
might lose the lot next time.
