XP Product ID Query (013?)

N

Neilo

Hi Guys,

Hope someone here can help as I'm unable to find any useful info on the
internet.

I would like to know what part of the product ID means. I know that
different parts of the product ID indicate different things but have come
across one that is confusing me. For example, I know that
xxxxx-011-xxxxxxx-xxxxx is an upgrade, and if 011 is replaced with OEM its an
OEM licence, and 270 would mean volume licence. What I dont know is what 013
means. Can anybody shed any light on this?

Thanks guys.

This page has the info you need:

Hmmm, The Channel ID 013 isn't listed!

What about the rest? For instance, what is the MPC?

How about an upgrade of a a prior Windows OEM installation as the
qualifying product?

YW. What is it you need to know, specifically? And where are you getting
this PID from? A COA sticker? From a program like Belarc Advisor? Do you
have access to a generic OEM CD of XP Pro?

I'm trying to make sure I have all the software licences and proof etc that
I should have. I was told (by a licencing specialist) that it would be
prudent to check the PID to make sure the install I have is the correct
install for my licence as I didnt personally install it. I was not expecting
to see 013 as the PID, which I am getting simply from right clicking My
Computer.

Surely, someboy, somewhere must know what 013 means?

What you get by right clicking on My Computer is stored at
HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion and can be any string at
all. Perhaps the person who installed it monkeyed around with it as 013 does
not appear to be valid.

Also, do the contents of the ProductId key at the location listed below
match what is in the ProductId key here?
HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion

I'm trying to make sure that the software I am using, corresponds with the
licence that I have. And as pointed out, 013 is not expected. The COA is an
OEM sticker so I was expecting OEM in the PID.

I got the PID simply by right clicking My Computer and going into Properties.

Any ideas anyone?

Apologies for confusing the PID with the key. The key (not the PID) is
found on the COA sticker. That may or may not match the key on your hard
drive. For instance, if you have a Royalty OEM like a Dell, the key on
the hard drive is known as a "golden master" (similar to a volume
license). That will be different from the unique key on the COA sticker.

Bottom line is that unless you have upgraded along the way, your license
is what came with the computer. What is the make and model and history
(e.g., did you purchase it new or used? Did it once have a volume
license?) of this computer? Did you receive documentation and
installation media with it? Have you or someone else upgraded it along
the way, and if so, how?

Is the key on your hard drive the same as the one on the COA sticker?

The reason I have started this, is because the paperwork we receive from our
suppliers is not very detailed so cannot be used as proof of licence. We buy
our PCs (mainly Dell) through a 3rd party who then put an image onto our PCs.
I am not convinced that things should be done in this way. I want to be
sure that we are correctly licenced, and not left in the lurch due to the 3rd
party not doing their job properly. The PCs all have OEM stickers on them,
but a lot of them dont have OEM PIDs, they have this 013 PID. I may well be
wrong, but to me, it seems a bit odd.

On the PCs that have the oddball 013 in the PID, are they all Dells? Are
you running the proper OS on them you have the license for? That is, did
you purchase a volume license or are you using the license that came
with the PC? If the latter, does the OS match what is on the COA
sticker(s)? That is, if the sticker states "Windows XP Professional," is
that what you are running? When updating online, does everything check
out with WGA? If so, I really wouldn't worry about it.

Yes. In the future, explain what 013 is, explain what COA is, and
explain what PID is for those of us who have no time to look it up.

Why should he do it in the future? He already did it in the past.
