XP Pro VPN not showing shared resources...

J

Jim Hubbard

I have set up an XP Pro machine as a VPN server at my office, and I have
allowed port 1723 through the firewall to this machine.

I can connect and authenticate on the remote network with no problem. But,
I cannot see any other machines on the network or any of the shared
resources.

I have disabled Microsoft's firewall to make sure it is not the culprit.

Any ideas?

I fixed it, although I don't really understand it.

I selected PPTP as the "Type of VPN" and I also disabled the firewall on the laptop I was using to connect.

Do you really have to leave the firewalls down or will port 1723 suffice? Does NetBIOS travel over port 1723?

Is there a way to set the PPTP server port on an XP Pro machine to a port other than 1723?

I ask because (if I could specify the PPTP ports) I could set up a VPN server on each internal XP Pro pc in the office (6 of them) and allow up to 6 users to work remotely without using a hardware VPN at all.

And, after the terror that is D-Link, I'd rather not use a hardware solution.

BTW, anybody in the market for a D-Link DI-808HV and a Dlink Wireless access point?

thank you for the update.

1. PPTP is you need.
2. VPN host firewall shpuld open port 1723 but not the client.
3. No, NetBIOS doesn't travel over port 1723
