XP Pro reinstall / Licensing

I have several PC's with XP Pro that have lost the ability to see installed
printers or add printers. I have found the only way to get back the installed
printers and add any additional printers is through reinstalling the OS,
ontop of the existing version of XP Pro OS. It sort of fills in the holes or
resets something in the registry. Not sure what, but it works while it keeps
the users existing settings
However, since I have installed SP2 on these OEM versions of XP PRO SP1 any
attempt to reuse the OEM version for the reinstall fails with something like,
you can not use this old version of XP.
I happen to have available an open license disk for XP Pro with SP2, but
wonder if its right to use this disk to reinstall over the existing SP1 OEM
version.
Anyone know what's legal and what's not or how to reuse the old OEM version
for the reinstall?
Thanks
Jim

You need to make a new OEM CD with SP2 slipstreamed in,
then perform a "repair install". You cannot use your
"open license disk for XP Pro with SP2" since it will not
accept an OEM Product Key.

Either one of the following utilities makes slipstreaming
(integrating) SP2 into Windows XP a breeze:

or

I would like to think it was alright to use the "open license" disc as long
as you are keeping the original XP Pro SP1 product key...

If you have purchased enough licenses with the open license then yes you
could do this. That is what open license is for. If you don't have the
required licenses through open license then you need to create a
slipstreamed CD from the OEM CD with SP2 slipstreamed into it.

Wouldn't work.

Product Keys are bound to the specific type and language of CD
and/or license (OEM, Volume, retail, full, or Upgrade) with which they
are purchased. For example, a WinXP Home OEM Product Key won't work for
any retail version of WinXP Home, or for any version of WinXP Pro, and
vice versa. An upgrade's Product Key cannot be used with a full version
CD, and vice versa. An OEM Product Key will not work to install a
retail product. An Italian Product Key will not work with an English
CD. Bottom line: Product Keys and CD types cannot be mixed & matched.
