XP Pro - Reboots and Freezes

B

Bwallacejr

I've started having issues with my PC. I'm using Windows XP Professional
5.1.2600 with SP2.

For the past few days about once a day my computer reboots. Today it's
started freezing up.

I was using the System Configuration Utility and noticed an entry in Startup
where the "Startup Item" and "Command" were blank. The Location is
HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run". When I use RegEdit I
see an entry in this location. The "Name" is (Default), the type is REG_SZ
and it shows Data of "Not Set". There is information in Binary Data that
looks like '0 0 0 0 '.

Any ideas????

How much RAM memory?

Try Ctrl+Alt+Delete to select Task Manager and click the Performance
Tab. Under Commit Charge what is the Total, the Limit and the Peak?

You should be able to gather more information from Task Manager. With
the Processes tab open select View, Select, Columns and check the boxes
before Peak Memory Usage and Virtual Memory size. What are the figures
for the 6 processes using the largest amounts?

Please post copies of all Error and Warning Reports appearing in
the System and Application logs in Event Viewer for the last boot. No
Information Reports or Duplicates please. Indicate which also appear in
a previous boot.

You can access Event Viewer by selecting Start, Control Panel,
Administrative Tools, and Event Viewer. When researching the meaning
of the error, information regarding Event ID, Source and Description
are important.

A tip for posting copies of Error Reports! Run Event Viewer and double
click on the error you want to copy. In the window, which appears is a
button resembling two pages. Click the button and close Event
Viewer. Now start your message (email) and do a paste into the body of
the message. Make sure this is the first paste after exiting from
Event Viewer.

Are there any yellow question marks in Device Manager? Right click on
the My Computer icon on your Desktop and select Properties,
Hardware,Device Manager. If yes what is the Device Error code?

Hope this helps.

Does your computer because you select Restart or of it's own volition?

Disable automatic restart on system failure. This should help by
allowing time to write down the STOP code properly. Right click on
the My Computer icon on the Desktop and select Properties, Advanced,
Start-Up and Recovery, System Failure and uncheck box before
Automatically Restart.

Do not re-enable automatic restart on system failure until you have
resolved the problem. Check for variants of the Stop Error message.

Please post a copy of the Stop Error message.

Are you using Trillian Messenger? Otherwise you could have malware?

What version of Microsoft Outlook are you using?

Thanks for your help.

I have disabled automatic restart and will let you know the code on the next
reboot.
I am using Trillian.
All devices are functions properly (No yellow question marks).

Do you have any idea what the blank entry in System Configuration -> Startup
is?

Do you have any idea what the blank entry in System
Configuration -Startup is?

No.

Use Autoruns to find any unwanted start ups!
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/sysinternals/ProcessesAndThreads/Autoruns.mspx

With Autoruns you can uncheck an item, which disables it from starting,
or you can can right click an item and then delete it. If you uncheck
you can recheck to re-enable the item. It is a much safer approach than
editing the Registry. Another useful feature of the programme is that
you can right click an item and select Search Online to get information
about the item selected.
