XP Pro Network Login

M

Mister Moe

I have connected an XP Pro machine to a window 98 machine
via router with cat5. I can access everything just fine
from my XP Pro machine, but when I disable simple file
sharing the win 98 still shows the name of my XP Pro
machine but requests a password do access. The exact
message is:

Resource: \\XPCOMP\\IPC$
Password:

I do not know the password, what IPC$ is, where I might
find it, or how to change the password. I have tried
logging into the 98 machine with one of my XP
administrator account names and passwords, using that
pass in the password box, and everything else I can think
of. The only way I have found to fix it is to either
reenable simple file sharing (but then I can't access the
XP Pro's Program Files) or go into Admin Tools -> Local
Security Settings and change the Network Access: Sharing
and Security Model for Local Accounts from "Classic"
to "Guest". This is a security problem because I wish to
delegate individual rights to my users. I know how to do
this in the Sharing and Security tabs of my shared
folders, I have tried specifying "Everyone" as Full
Control but that still doesn't work and besides I want to
change control settings for individual users.

Any help would be EXTREMELY appreciated.

Thanks.

to share mixed os, you may have many options as you mentioned, enabling
guest account and enabling simple file sharing. Another option is creating a
username and password on xp for win98 logon.
