XP Not Saving Passwords

I am a Mac user new to Windows and just got a laptop running XP> I am unable
to get XP to save passwords. Have read threads and have Started Protected
Storage and checked Auto Complete. I unchecked required boxes, then rechecked
and was able to get IE to ask to save passwords (I was not being prompted to
save before). However, when I closed IE and then restarted to test I was back
to having to re enter. I have seen that there is something needed to be done
with the Registry if the above steps do not work but there is a warning that
you need to know what you are doing. I do not. This seems to be a fairly
frequent issue ...is there some other way to remedy this? Computer is brand
new...should I just reinstall? I did restore to original settings but still
no luck. I have also seen other quirky behaviour: Use of keyboard shortcuts
to cut and paste are not always working and I am unable to Delete with Del
key in posts or Outlook I have to set cursor and just Back Space;Outlook
will not download descriptions for newsgroups and (and I am unable to find
newsgroups in the listings!) and asks to download entire list each time after
close(after telling me it will only do so once) and does not save subscribed
newsgroups) Please advise.; I want to enjoy my laptop.

Hi,

Is the machine new? Or "new to you"? If the former, I would seek support
from the manufacturer as the problems with the keys may be due to faulty
hardware. If the latter, I would create a clean, new installation to work
from rather than try to fix the remnants of someone else's use. There is no
way of knowing what may have been done prior to this.

Also, Outlook (at least 2002 or 2003 versions) is not normally used for
newsgroups, Outlook Express is.
