XP not recognizing new NIC card

I have an older Gateway computer that originally came with Windows ME. I
upgraded to XP Home edition a couple of years ago and shortly thereafter
ordered high speed (cable) internet service. When the installer came to hook
me up he said he couldn't create an ethernet connection so he hooked the
modem up with a USB. I assumed the NIC card was bad, so I bought a new one
and installed it, but Windows XP will not recognize it. Support at Gateway
said I should update my chipset drivers at Intel, which I did, but this did
not fix the problem.
Any ideas would be greatly appreciated!

Try installing the card in another PCI slot.And/or,open control-panel,open
"add
new hardware wizard",if it doesnt find it,manually select the device. Also,on
some modems, like youre try connecting both at the same time,if xp connects,
it will bring up the "safe to remove connection" wizard...

this is just a guess but the usb drivers may be interfering with the NIC you
may have to remove them.

Mike,

Some NIC cards need the drivers to be installed FIRST, and then
physically install the NIC card... I suggest to do this...

Sometimes the sound card and NIC will clash, even though there's no
problems shown in the Device Manager. One time I got a NIC to work by
removing the sound card, then reinserting/reinstalling the sound card
after the NIC was seen and installed.

hth,
