XP not booting in any mode

Since Monday 2 laptops a Fujitsu and Compaq laptop with XP professional
refuse to boot anymore. At boot, I get the screen about saying "Windows did
not start properly, etc." with options to either go into safe mode, normal
boot, command prompt, etc. I have tried all of them with no success. When any
option is selected the PC just freezes on the same screen. If XP bootable CD
is used & I go to the Repair Console after I press R, it goes straight to
prompt. If I try Dir command at root, I get an error (Enumeration error or
something). If I try to install Windows normally the install software tells
me that the only way to install is with format first. I can see the
partition. I know on one of the PC's had a windows update manually cancelled.
It was after that the problem started. Can anyone shed any light on the
situation or have any other laptops had this since Monday ???
