XP Networking and Retrospect 6.5 Backup issue

Has anyone experienced this problem before? I am having a problem backing up
one pc to the other pc's USB drive. Both pc's run XP Pro SP2 and are on the
same network segment. With a Netgear RP614 router maintaining LAN and ISP
connectivity. Unattended Retrospect backups from pc2 to the USB drive on pc1
fail with the errors below issued to the event log. Only the backup is having
an issue all other connectivity/copying between systems works fine.
The MS Knowledge Base only refers to these errors under article's 321733 and
812937 both of which should have been resolved with XP SP2.

could this be a corrupted directory structure on the usb drive, maybe
caused by not unmounting it before unplugging it?

I don't think so I run chkdsk on the USB drive at least once a month. Also
pc1 backs up to and restores files form this USB drive without any problems.
I have Retrospect installed on both pc's. I have tried to set the NIC
settings as close as possible but pc1 has a Intel motherboard with a 1G
connector (model P875PBZ) and pc2 has a Intel motherboard with a 100MB
connector (model P915PBL).

if you can, try an alternative backup device, newly formatted,
preferably on the same usb port, to rule out the drive itself.
I think it might still be a drive problem

Currently I do not have another USB drive to backup to. Could it possibly be
that this is do to a major speed difference in the speed of my USB 2.0 drive
and the speed of the drives in my system. The USB drive is an older 80G IDE
5400RPM and the drives in pc2 are 160G SATA NCQ drives in Raid 0
configuration. If I have to purchase another device to backup to I intend to
switch to a network or NAS device that I can plug into my router, seems like
USB 2.0 is getting to be to slow at 480MB.

If your network is 100Mbps then the 480Mbps USB is not a bottle neck,
and switching to NAS will not improve the speed.

To figure out if it is a network or a software issue, try using
Relative Rev Backup (http://www.datamills.com) to backup across the
network. Then if the problem repeats it self you know its
infrastructure related, otherwise it is a software issue.

i wouldnt have thought that the speed of your backup device is an issue,
as long as it is supported both by the operating system where it is
mounted and by the software that is accessing it, in your case
Retrospect.
As you said xp sp2 should have dealt with the smb signing issues, so at
the moment i would still see the drive as the first candidate for your
problem

Thanks very much for your assistance. I have located the cause of my problem.
Seems that when I plug in my USB harddrive and network connection on the same
motherboard block there is a conflict or possible overload. Luckily the Intel
D875PBZ board has 2 USB blocks one of them contains the 1G network connection
the other contains only USB connections. When I connect my USB harddrive to
the USB only block the problem disappears.

Good that you have found a workaround. I wonder what the issue really
is. Timing on the motherboard maybe.
I wonder if there are any updates for it to address the problem

good luck
