xp lan printer blues

Hello

I have a network of 2 PC's. The first has Win XP Home and a HP Color LaserJet 2500n connected through a USB cable
The second has Win XP Pro. On the first PC the printer works fine. The LAN is peer-to-peer (workgroup) connected on a 3Com swith. The printer is shared. The XP Pro PC can install the printer, although I an puzzled to see the port is set as DOT4__00 something (that denotes the USB port the first PC uses)

Still I cannot print, not even a test page. The second PC sends the file, only to report an error in the printing - Cancelling printing (user is Guest)

On the second PC, the event viewer displays "Execotion from the server has failed. At the DCOM server "FirstPC" while trying to activate the server"

Any hints? Thanks in advance..

With Windows XP, when you look at the Properties of a "Network Printer"
(e.g. from the XP Pro computer), you actually see the properties of the
printer from the print server computer (the XP Home computer in your
situation), which is why you see that the port is "Dot4".

Were either of these computers "upgraded" to Windows XP from an earlier
Windows OS?

See if the information at
http://members.shaw.ca/bsanders/CleanPrinterDrivers.htm helps.

Network printing between XP Pro and XP Home in a simple peer-to-peer network
is usually no problem, which leads me to suspect a printer driver issue.

Another possibility is to connect the printer directly to the "network".
The HP 2500n (according to the HP web site) has a built in Ethernet adapter
(RJ45 port). You could connect it to your 3Com switch, the configure each
computer to print directly to the printer (see
http://members.shaw.ca/bsanders/Printing to Print Server device.htm).

It is perfectly useless to know the right answer to the wrong question.
