As long as your hard drive is above 2Gb it should install. Try installing
with only one of your memory sticks in (ram), as XP only needs 64mb to run
(very slow, but it will run). If it does not install, try a different memory
stick.

As to your question about the location of the read error - if it has started
the GUI mode of the install, then it has already copied to the hard drive -
if that is the case, then I would replace the hard drive - if it has not
started the grapical bit of the install, then it is still copying off the cd.
Check the cd in another pc if poss, and run a cd lens cleaner through your
cd rom drive - if you don't have one, remove cd rom drive from machine,
remove cover from cd rom drive and use a cotton bud or something similar to
clean the laser lense with aftershave or purfume if you have no cd cleaning
solution. NOTE!!! If your cd drive is still in warranty period this will
invalidate warranty!!!

Another thing to try - when you first start installation, and the computer
asks "Press F6 to install drivers for SCSI or RAID" press F7 (you have to do
this quickly) - this will disable ACPI - basically, this disables the
computer's ability to power down completley when you select "Shut Down" from
the Start button. You have to manually press the power button to turn off.

How much do you know about computers? I have been assuming you know only a
small amount - if you know more, I am not trying to tell you how to do your
job if you know what I mean - I am still learning, and this is helping me to
use my new skills to help others!

Please let me know how you get on.
Thanks

Stephen,

Thanks for your input. It seems to me that I always have something new to
learn. Don't be afraid to give me simple instructions or tasks. (Same goes
for Dixonian69)
I take no offense at "brain storming" to solve a problem. It is sort of
remote control, I get to be your hands and eyes.

Question: "GUI" ?

By graphical I assume that you mean went the screen starts showing signs of
some check boxes and a count down to installation completion.

What will disabling the ACPI do for faciliting the installation ?

No warranties to worry about here. I'll try cleaning it.

I'll also give the ram sticks a try.

Hi again,
GUI - Grapical User Interface - basically none text screen - all MS Windows
operating systems use GUI as their "main" screen; whereas Unix (and other
similar) are Text based screens (mostly)

By GUI, I mean with Win XP installation - The computer starts first time
(blank Hard drive), and boots from CD into the setup program. This is what I
call the text based portion of setup. The machine then restarts, and shows
the Win XP logo, and then a coloured screen appears, with various statements
on RH Side about the capabilities and new features of windows XP, and on the
left side, there is a few bullet points that light up when the computer
performs the tasks (and the percentage countdown at the bottom). This is
what I call the GUI portion of setup.

When you remove the cover off the CDrom, be careful to note where the screws
come out of - if they go back in the wrong place, it could damage it - I
usually use a marker pen and mark an arrow pointing to the correct screw
holes - also beware of springs!

I have a Pentium 2 machine, which I was trying to install XP onto. It kept
giving me a "Blue Screen" stop error at around the same point at the GUI
install portion of the setup. I read various web pages, and carefully read
the stop error, and it instructed me to press F7 at the point instucted.

This any help?

Hi Stephen,

I'm definitely not making it to the GUI portion of the install. I'll keep a
close eye on the cd units screws. I won't be back at the machine for about 4
hours. I picked up a laser lense cleaning kit and a couple of compressed air
cans. My plan is to clean first, try it; if a failure occurs I'll try the F7
key, then the ram removal you had suggested if it doesn't load.

I'll keep you posted.

Hi Stephen,

I don't know if you are still following the thread, but in the event you
have automatic notications set...

I purchased a new Seagate 120GB drive (up from the old 30GB) and the
installation has gone right into the GUI portion with no problem.

Looks like the old hard drive had some "issues."

Thank you for all your help (and Dixonian 69 as well.) You both gave me the
information that I needed to push this project to the end.
