I am trying to install XP Pro on a Dell XPS 700R with 768 MB of ram. Clean
install with format set to NTFS. Installtion stops with unable to load
driver.cab. Have tried several times using both Home Edition OEM disk and
Pro Upgrade. Any ideas would be appreciated. Thankyou.

I recieved the system as a gift. I have a Home Full install disk and the Pro
upgrade.
If the recovery cd/set can be located, what am I looking for?

Windows 98, that I upgraded to XP Pro.

XP Pro install on boot up. It asks for previous version of any one of
several MS' Operating Systems. I used a Home Edition CD that came with
another unit that I have. It formats OK, then asks for XP Pro disk to do the
install with. It stops at driver.cab file install as previously stated. I
have also tried to "redo" the install from scratch using just the Home
Edition disk, same result.

I am unable to locate the original Dell disks that were shipped with the
system at this point in time.

Okay. still partly confused but I'll try.
Had windows 98. somehow it has been deleted from hard drive.

Tried to upgrade to Win XP ( using upgrade version) with OEM Home Edition as
qualifying media.

I don't think you can upgrade using an upgrade version on top of an OEM
version.
Probably could upgrade if you had a full version of XP but then why not just
clean install XP. I guess because you would have to reload all previous Win
98 or Home applications.

Post a new question: Can you upgrade OEM with XP upgrade CD?
see if you get same answer as I gave.

Sorry. I think you're stuck with purchasing a full retail version of XP.

Windows 98 was the original OS. I had previously upgraded it to XP Pro
without any difficulties.

After SP2 was installed (by disk) I noticed some programs not behaving quite
right. Lived with this for sometime. I did a repair install of XP (and
reloaded SP2) everything was OK, again for a while.

Then I noticed that Norton Internet Professional 2004 wasn't live updating.
Spy Sweeper couldn't find anything and neither could Norton. Norton's web
site said to "uninstall" and "reinstall". When I went to install Norton, I
got installation errors. Their website said that most likely problem was
some componet in the registery not deleted on uninstall. Tried their
uninstall software to no avail.

That when my "bright" idea came to do a clean install of XP (and then reload
all of my other software); hence my problems.

I tried one more time to do a clean install last night and I get this
message now:

"You can only install to GPT disks on IA-64 machines and MBR disks on X-86
machines.

You can only upgrade installations on GPT disk on IA-64 machines and MBR
disks on X-86 machines."

This is the first time that message came up.

Is is possible that with Dell on that vintage computer that my only option
is to go back to 98 and then upgrade to XP?

Or do I have a problem with a bad sector of my hard drive ?

Lastly, am I doing a clean install correctly? I am following the
instructions from the Michael Stevens Tech website.

Any ideas or test that you can think of that would get me going in the right
direction again?

Can I make a suggestion?

Try a different CD drive, try removing the memory sticks one at a time. I
had similar problem, and when memory sticks were replaced, problem solved!
There are also various programs that will test your memory and cd drive.

Good thought, I've been even thinking about a hard drive at this point. The
one that is currently installed is only 30 gigs; do you think that it is to
small?

To fast with the post button...

I had (probalay about a year ago) replaced all three ram chips with 256k
from Crucial. No problem up until now.

Sorry about the delay, two jobs with no sleep.

When it says that it is unable to copy a file during installation is it
trying to read it off of the cd or expand it off of the hard drive ?

I also "reloaded" and watched for the GTP or MRB indication. It
automatically went with MRB, and loaded up to 23% of the program before it
stopped. This is up from the previous 17%.

I reread my post, it might not have been clear. I took out the 128k ram
originally installed and added 3-256k from crucial, to make sure that I had
enough to run XP and other programs.
