xp installation problems

somebody please help! i have recently had my pc built to spec for me with a
copy of xp pro. when installing for the first time after formatting the hard
drive the blue error screen appeared with the message "unmountable boot
volume" displayed. i tryed various things such as removing the graphics card
with no avail.the shop i purchased everything from advised then that the hard
drive could be faulty (hitachi 80gb) and gave me a replacement, however the
same message appeared. i then changed the hitachi drives for a maxtor 120gb
as the shop suspected a bad batch of hitachi drives and again no difference.
the strange thing is i have since installed xp pro on a 20gb maxtor drive and
then tryed it on a 10drive and it worked perfectly. currently i am using my
computer with xp installed on the 20gb drive but want to use the 120gb
maxtor. the motherboard i have is an asus k8s-mx series and the processor is
an athlon 64 3000+. i am using the correct 80 wire cable to connect my hard
drive( as this was previously suggested was the problem) i also have two cd
drives connected. it seems strange that i can install on 10 & 20gb hard
drives but not 80 or higher.
i would be extremely gratefull if someone could help solve my dilemma!

Want to consider clearing the CMOS and re-flashing the
BIOS to an updated version? It is strange that it would
see an <80 GB HD but not one >80 GB. The other thought
is that since this is an Athlon CPU, verify that the
clock setting is that for the "real" CPU speed and not
the "tested" CPU speed. That is, this CPU might work
better at 2.8 GHz in this system instead of 3.0 GHz,
for example. "Over-clocking" could produce similar
symptoms involving the HD.
