XP Install does like 250gb HDD

Dear All,

Can anybody shed some light on this, I don't know if it is XP or my
Motherboard (etc) I've tried to do a fresh re-install after buying a new
bigger HDD, I've changed the BIOS, press the key to boot from CD, and then I
get the Blue Screen with "Windows Setup" on the top left, and usually with
my old small HDD it would ask me to "Press F6 for 3rd Party Drivers" etc....
but this doesn't it just sits there? nothing scrolling/appearing on the
bottom. Is it XP doesn't like the big drive, or my motherboard, etc causing
the problems. At the moment I'm resorting to copying a Ghost image from my
old 40gb drive to do a re-install.

Anybody able to help me on this one?

Regards
Paul.

A large HDD requires XP SP2

This may not be it in your case but I changed my hard drive some time back
and had what sounds like the same thing. Cut a long story short it was a USB
card reader still plugged in that stopped the install process and nothing to
do with the new hard drive.

Worth checking I think.
best of luck

That wouldnt make any difference as win would install but only partition
128gb approx leaving the rest as spare

You purchased an IDE or sata hd?
If sata your mobo suports the hd version of sata?
eg sata1 mobo = sata1 hd (or sata2 hd jumpered to sata1)

Paul:
It really would be helpful if you more clearly identified what you're trying
to do and precisely what the problem is.

You have a new 250 GB HDD which you've installed in your machine and you're
attempting to fresh install the XP on that HDD, right?

During this time the 250 GB HDD is the only HDD connected in the machine,
right?

The HDD is what? PATA? SATA?

And there's no question that you've connected/configured that HDD correctly
as you've installed it in your system, right?

And before this new 250 GB HDD was installed there was no problem whatsoever
with your previous HDD (the 40 GB one). It booted without incident and the
system functioned without any problems? That's right, isn't it?

So now you boot with the XP installation CD to start the installation
process. The XP OS includes SP1 and/or SP2?

But the XP installation CD doesn't properly boot. It stops somewhere during
the boot process. Is that it? So you're never able to fresh install the XP
OS onto that HDD.

Perhaps some of the above will give you a clue as to the cause of the
problem and what you can do to remedy it. If not, let us know.

Yes, I'm attempting a fresh install on the new 250gig HDD
During this time the 250 GB HDD is the only HDD connected in the machine,
right?

I have tried the install with all the other drives connected, and I've tried
with only the HDD and one DVDRW (to boot the cd from)
The HDD is what? PATA? SATA?

The HDD is IDE
And there's no question that you've connected/configured that HDD
correctly as you've installed it in your system, right?

it detects within the BIOS, I've got the correct Jumper setting (as I try to
avoid Cable Select), and I have a 80 pin cable, connected to IDE0 as a
master
And before this new 250 GB HDD was installed there was no problem
whatsoever with your previous HDD (the 40 GB one). It booted without
incident and the system functioned without any problems? That's right,
isn't it?

No problems with the 40 gig HDD, I could re-install any time I wanted, with
no problems.
So now you boot with the XP installation CD to start the installation
process. The XP OS includes SP1 and/or SP2?

My XP CD has SP2 built into it.
But the XP installation CD doesn't properly boot. It stops somewhere
during the boot process. Is that it? So you're never able to fresh install
the XP OS onto that HDD.

Yes, that is correct, it sits on the blue screen with "Windows Setup" on it,
and I see no movement on the bottom of the screen, 3rd party driver request
etc.
Perhaps some of the above will give you a clue as to the cause of the
problem and what you can do to remedy it. If not, let us know.

I did read on another post (in this thread) about a USB Card reader, I have
a card reader in the machine (sits in the other floppy bay) and connects
internally via a 8 pin block to the motherboard, I might try an install
again shortly with that removed to see...

Regarding another post about the BIOS, I have checked that I have the most
up to date BIOS for my mother board.

Thanks for coming back to me with all this info...

Paul.

Hi,
The card reader I had the problem with (as I suggested in an earlier post)
is an external one connected to the USB port. It is consistent on my
machine, with that connected the XP setup will always hang at the first blue
setup screen. If yours is an internal reader and doesn't give a problem with
the 40Gb drive connected then I doubt it will have an effect on the 250Gb.

Paul:
It's *always* preferable when you're installing the XP OS to disconnect
*all* storage devices from the system before undertaking the install process
although I would doubt your installed USB card reader would cause this
particular type of problem. But it wouldn't be the first time that a
installed USB device caused a boot problem.

Setting aside your 250 GB HDD - what happens if you have your current boot
drive - the 40 GB HDD - connected and you boot to the XP installation CD.
Same problem? You still can't get to the opening screen following the
loading of the XP setup files? No, now that I re:read your post I see you
can't even get that far. The setup files are *never* loaded, right? Think
there's any possibility of the installation CD being defective?

Assuming there are no problems booting to the XP installation CD with your
current boot drive, it might be useful to check out the 250 GB HDD with the
diagnostic from the manuf. of that disk. You did previously say the disk was
recognized in the BIOS, didn't you? BTW, that disk is new, right?
Unpartitioned/unformatted?

Assuming this is not a defective installation CD problem nor a defective
HDD, have you tried connecting/configuring the disk to another IDE channel
and trying the install?

If you install the 250 GB HDD as a secondary HDD in your machine and boot
with your boot drive, is the new disk reflected OK in Disk Management
(perhaps a message re initialization of the disk appears)?
