XP Install damaged and wiped my music/photos files

Hello and anticipated thanks for your advice.

I took my computer to a tech-store to have XP installed and buy it a
new RAM, since the machine is old (2000) and the RAM was pretty low
(124).

My OS was Windows ME and the first problem was during install, since it
gave an "incompatible" error, or at least that's was I was told later.
The option was to install XP as if it was a brand-new computer, wiping
the C drive contents in the process.

My D drive contains my music/photos files and when the installation was
finally done, I found that the files were either mostly gone (music)
and/or damaged (photos).

In the case of the photos, when I click over them it would give the
proper number of Kb, but the photo viewer is unable to provide an
image, so I assume that the files are fine but somehow XP is not
letting me view them.

Please ANY help and/or advice is appreciated before I go crazy. I plan
to take the computer to the store today, but would really like to go
informed with the info you might be able to give me.

HUGE THANKS

Good thing you had your photos backed up then to CD.
