XP Home Welcome screen logon issue

I have a new machine (Pentium D) with XP Home (and all patches) installed. We
use FUS and the XP Welcome Screen. Normal accounts are restricted user
accounts.

After one user has logged in and gone back to the Welcome screen, sometimes
no-one can ever log back in - they suffer password failures even though the
password typed is correct. This problem affects all users, even users with no
password.

I have checked that the security logs are ok, disabled logon auditing,
increased the number of logon failures a user is allowed, shortened the
lockout timeout (all really hard to do on an XP Home machine). I have also
checked the Regional settings for all users. It does not matter who has been
actually logged on. This problem is very frustrating - we like Fast User
Switching but it is becoming unusable on this new machine. At least it is
fast when rebooting.

Can anyone help

I've had similar problems. Their origin seems to be security patch
923191. Sometimes it happens that there is no cursor inside the white
password box, so that there is no way to log on without going to the
classic login screen (double strg+alt+del).

Several other XP users also experience such problems. Unfortunately no
solution to this set of problems has been found yet. I have contacted
the Microsoft support hotline vie e-mail - still waiting for some
response. Seems to be an annoying bug.

Thanks Lars - yep - I get the "no cursor" thing as well, just less often.
Interestingly, when that happened on another computer I could still use my
non-passworded account to log in.

Because I use Fast User Switching, I cannot use the classic logon if the
screen locks up. I have to reboot. Maybe I will back out 923191 if I can.
