XP Home - Running very slow.

I wonder if there is any help out there for why my system now runs so very
slow.
Things went bad when I McAfee upgraded itself to its latest operation(s) and
ever since this happened my whole normal operations has gone down hill.

I wrote McAfee about this and have never heard back from them. And I don't
expect to.

I switched my computer over to Linux (I have a dual boot process) and ran
that.
Everything works nice and quick!! My email comes up like a snap and my web
pages work really well.

And than I booted back up and went back into XP and there I sit - waiting
for *anything* to come up. Which it eventually does but it takes forever to
happen.

McAfee is bloated and takes up a lot of system resources (as does Norton).
Uninstall McAfee and install a lighter, better antivirus and see what
happens. Since you didn't include any of your computer specs, I can't say
how "light" you should go. F-Prot is a very good and system-light av that I
use on my Windows machines. Other recommended av's are Kaspersky, NOD32,
and even Avast and AVG.

Other than that, make sure your computer is virus/malware-free.

As Malke stated I recommend you to use another AV program like Bitdefender
Internet Security. And click start - run - type msconfig press enter - click
startup tab and uncheck unneeded programs. This will speed up your computer.

My understanding is that Bit Defender doesn't have an "always on" function
but is just "on demand". If this is correct, I wouldn't recommend it for
Windows machines. Windows machines need antivirus to always be resident.

Malke,

I dont know well what you mean by "Always on" but Bitdefender scans your
system files, asks you when attempting to do something about your system and
all others always.

You don't know what "resident" means?! Perhaps we have a language
difficulty. Some free antivirus programs do not run in the background,
providing constant protection. They only work "on demand"; IOW when you
start a scan. An example is F-Prot free version for Linux (there is no free
version for Windows) and I believe, the free version of Bit Defender. I got
this last information from David Lipman, whose specialty is virus-fighting.
I spent some time looking at Bit Defender's website and could not find a
comparison between the options of its free version and its paid versions.
Hence the reason I qualified my original statement about Bit Defender by
saying "if this is true".

The paid versions certainly look like they do the job correctly. If the free
version does not run resident, it is not adequate to protect a Windows box.
