XP Home repair failed to install product catalogs - fatal error

An HP pavilion laptop with XP Home was failing to boot. When I tried in Safe
Mode it was hanging after loading the MUP.sys files. I tired to repair using
the system disc that came with the laptop. Now I get an error "setup failed
to install the product catalog" Data error (cyclic redundancy check).

Anyone know how to deal with this? There are a couple of files I really need
to get off this machine.

Thanks in advance to all who offer suggestions, whether they work or not.

Thanks Rey,

I have already been there done that. The laptop would not stat from "Last
known good config.." I tried to use the Repair console option without
success, and then tried the repair option under operating system install or
setup. Win XP deleted a number of file and began to reinstall, then I get the
error messages.

Check the CD itself for any scratches or smudges, if possible use another CD.
Also, swap the CD drive for one you know works (if you have a spare one, or
if you can loan one from someone else).
