XP Home Networking-Share File Problem

Chuck

Yes, many times there is no IRPStackSize set in parameters, and I have found
on several occasions adding this setting will allow computers to share.

Eric

Eric,

That's scary. Have you recorded the complete and exact error message?

G

Well, I completed that fix to the registry on all 3 computers, there was no
IRPStackSize on any of them, but this failed to fix the problem.

OK, I managed to change the node to broadcast. Still no luck. Can you think
of anything else?

Let's see what changing the Node Type, and eliminating the WINS setting,
actually had. Start with updated "browstat status" and "ipconfig /all" on all
computers please. We'll go from there.

The issue has been rendered moot this morning by my nephew. He has also
been looking into this. I never figured out that if HP can access Dell all I
have to do is use Windows Explorer on HP and transfer the files to Dell. I
was so caught up in trying to access HP from Dell and transfer the files
there that I couldn't see this alternative. I am still mystified by the
problem but I have a workaround so I'm not going to drive myself or you guys
crazy trying to fix it. I really appreciate all your help!

Thanks for reminding us of the need for perspective. As long as file transfer,
from on computer to the other, is a one time thing, or is convenient the way
that you want to do it, that's great. If that procedure becomes less
convenient, and you want to fix the problem, let us know.

Thanks again Chuck to you and Eric. I will let you know if I want to tackle
this at some later time.

One final thought - I've seen many strange problems with HP computers - one
client with 5 identical machines and all with different unsolvable problems,
including problems sharing printers, etc... HP computers require their
version of XP which has specific drivers for compatibility. If something
changes, any thing (a component value, etc.) , these problems arise. Have
you tried HP's (almost useless) help line?

Possibly they might have a driver to download and solve the problem.

Well, just a thought.

Thanks Eric. I have had many problems with this HP. I am probably
responsible. I had a network installed and it was sharing properly a year
ago. I then decided to restrict access to the HP for security reasons and I
turned sharing off. I may have done something at that time to hinder the
ability to share in the future. I also had a bridge at one time althougth I
can't say why or how I even set it up. There is no network bridge now. I am
content to be able to push content from HP to the other computers and I have
transfered most of the files I needed that way. I will probably leave it at
that. thanks for your help and suggestions.
