XP Home Networking-Share File Problem

G

Guest

If this issue has been covered before please excuse me. I have looked
through several threads but haven't found an answer that works for me.
I have a wireless laptop, and hard wired Dell Desktop and HP Desktop (host)
as the main computer, all on XP Home They can all access the internet fine
and the Laptop can share files with the Dell and vice versa, but neither the
laptop nor the Dell can access the files on HP. HP can access files on Dell
Desktop and the Laptop. I have the files set to share on all 3, the firewall
doesn’t seem to be the issue ( I turned it off and that didn’t work). I’ve
run the troubleshooter on HP and even rerun the whole networking process on
all 3 machines but I still get this message: \\HP is not accessible. You
might not have permission to use the network resource. Contact the
administrator of the server to find out if you have access permission.
Access Denied.
Guest account is turned on, on all computers. All computers are in the same
workgroup. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

One of the most common causes of this problem would be a misconfigured or
overlooked personal firewall, but there are other possibilities too. Even when
you might have "turned it off", you can still have problems. And antivirus /
antiworm protection can have the same effect. Read this article:
<http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/10/irregularities-in-workgroup-visibility.html>
http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/10/irregularities-in-workgroup-visibility.html

Did you activate Guest properly for network use? Read this article:
<http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/06/file-sharing-under-windows-xp.html#Help>
http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/06/file-sharing-under-windows-xp.html#Help

If no help yet, provide "browstat status" and "ipconfig /all" from each
computer, so we can diagnose the problem. Read this article, and linked
articles, and follow instructions precisely:

Thanks for the help Chuck. I have been reading through some of the
information. Concerning activating a guest account this information only
applies to XP Pro is that correct?
Run (Control Panel - Administrative Tools - ) Computer Management. Under
System Tools - Local Users and Groups - Users, find the account in question.
Doubleclick (or rightclick, and select Properties), and clear (or check)
"Account is disabled".

I don't see Local Users and Groups under tools on my system. I activated
the Guest acct using Control Panel-User Accounts and then turning the guest
acct on.

Guest has to be activated properly for network use. In the case of XP Home,
which, as you noted, doesn't have the Users controlled under Computer
Management, try entering "net user Guest" in a Command Window. Look at the data
presented, and find "Account active" - does it show "Yes" or "No"? If it shows
"Yes" right now, you'll need to look at my other article, for problems.
<http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/10/irregularities-in-workgroup-visibility.html>
http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/10/irregularities-in-workgroup-visibility.html

If "Account active" shows "No", try entering "net user Guest /active:yes". Then
test for your problem. If your problem still exists, you need to proceed with
the above article.

OK, I have checked the Firewall settings and I don't see any problems. The
guest accts have been checked and are active on all 3 computers. BTW, the
Dell is running Windows XP Media Center if this makes a difference. Here is

OK, we'll start with HP, that's running IPV6, aka Teredo Tunneling. Please
remove that, check everything after an hour, and rerun and post updated
diagnostics for all computers. See this article:

I thought I had removed it but it reappeared once I restarted the HP. Please
give me the procedure to remove IPV6, aka Teredo Tunneling.

Hmm. Do you have some sort of configuration protection product? What security
programs do you use? You should just delete IPV6, aka Microsoft TCP/IP V6 from
the items list in Local Area Connection - Properties. See my article:

After these changes I still encounter the same problem.

Well, All browstat and ipconfig logs are clean, and look good. Except for ONE
detail, in all 3 ipconfig logs:
Primary WINS Server . . . . . . . : 0.0.0.4
Do you really have a WINS server?
<http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/05/reading-ipconfig-and-diagnosing.html>
http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/05/reading-ipconfig-and-diagnosing.html

This is definitely a problem!
Node Type . . . . . . . . . . . . : Hybrid
<http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/05/address-resolution-on-lan.html#Hybrid>
http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/05/address-resolution-on-lan.html#Hybrid
Should account for this:
Status for domain WORKGROUP on transport
\Device\NetBT_Tcpip_{31A1326A-B912-4A23-AD0A-5D693E423FAC}
Browsing is active on domain.
Master browser name is: HP
Could not connect to registry, error = 53 Unable to determine build of
browser master: 53
Unable to determine server information for browser master: 5

And thanks for your kind comments in my Guestbook. Having just put it in place
a couple days ago, it's gratifying to see it filling up.

G

I don't believe I have a WINS server and therefore the node should be
broadcast? Can you tell me how to fix this? Thanks.

G

Guest

I'm not sure I'm comfortable changing the registry. Is there an easy
alternative to connect HP to Dell directly and transfer the needed files?

C

Chuck

There were no entries for addresses in WINS. There was one on the Router
settings.

Well, that's the problem. Just clear the router setting and reboot everything.

If the preceding does not work, try this on the HP:

Start
Run
"regedit" and enter
click on the + in front of HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE
click on the + in front of SYSTEM
click on the + in front of Current Control Set
click on the + in front of Services
click on the + in front of lanmanserver
click on parameters to view all in the right side box
Verify that there is a DWORD value - IRPStackSize and that it is at least 16
or more in the parenthesis
If it is missing:
right click on parameters and new and DWORD value
in the box that appears type IRPStackSize (exactly as here) and enter
right click on the new entry IRPStackSize and click on modify
click on decimal and enter 22 in the box, OK
close regedit and re-boot and try the share

All 3 computers should have this setting

Eric,

Did you actually have an IRPStackSize problem that did NOT have "Not enough
server storage is available to process this command." in the message?

T

TV-Engineer

Yes, many times there is no IRPStackSize set in parameters, and I have found
