XP Home cannot see XP Pro

I have two PC's on my home LAN connected to a Linksys WRT54G Wireless
Broadband Router. One computer (new Dell Dimension XPS Gen 4) can see my
older home built PC (P4 2.7Ghz 1GB RAM) and retrieve files from it and such.
However, the older PC cannot see the Dell machine at all on the network.
This hasn't been a problem until I tried to have a LAN race. Obviously with
one not seeing the other, no racing. The Dell system has Windows XP
Professional SP2 and Norton Antivirus 2005. The older PC had Windows XP Home
SP2 and Norton Antivirus 2005. Any ideas on why only one PC can see the
other? Any help and direction here would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in
advance.

Roger

p.s. - I have never upgraded the firmware in my router since I bought it.
It's at version 1.42.2 now and Linksys has an upgrade to 4.20.7. Should I
upgrade or not? I'm afraid to do so and screw up the whole system.

It should be noted that I also have a Dell Inspiron 5100 running Windows XP
Home SP2 and this has no problem being seen by my other XP Home system and
seeing it (sharing files too). I did run the browstat program on my Main XP
home system and got the following information:

When I run Browstat on my other 2 systems I get the same message (including
the XP Professional system that the Laptop cannot see either)

What is causing the error 53 and why does it not affect the laptop being
seen by the XP Home system but not see the XP Professional system? Any help
and direction on this would be greatly appreciated.

One more thing. On the Windows XP Professional system, when you go to My
Network Places and click on View Network Computers it does not show itself
listed, but lists the other two Window XP Home systems. The computer has an
assigned name but the other two computers can't see it either. This is
driving me absolutely nuts!! How do I get this one system to show up on the
network? Any help here would be greatly appreciated.

Someone here at work in the IT department told me the problem could be
resolved as follows:

1. Need to share a drive on the Windows XP Pro system (not currently doing
so).

2. Need to have a user logon and password for all 3 machines (currently I
don't).

Are there any of the Windows XP MVP's here (Chuck maybe) that can please
confirm that this will resolve my problem? Don't I have to resolve the error
53 problem that I had I found with Browstat? Thanks for any and all help
provided.

Roger,

Neither the "error = 53" nor the ability to see one computer from the other
should be related to accounts setup. Not having anything shared may make a
difference though.

<http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/06/file-sharing-under-windows-xp.html>

There are several possible causes for the "error = 53".
<http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/06/mysterious-error-53-aka-name-not-found.html>

If no help yet, let's look at "ipconfig /all" from each computer. Read this
article, and linked articles, and follow instructions precisely:

Chuck,

I enabled file sharing and added password protection to my user accounts
when I login. Same problem still. The Windows XP Home systems can see
themselves but not the Windows XP Pro machine. The Windows XP Pro system can
see the Windows XP Home systems, but not itself. This is driving me %$#@
nuts. Is there a checkbox somewhere in the Networking settings to "Show
System" on the network? Should I run the dreaded Networking Wizard? I'm
ready to call Dell Technical support and get someone on Bangladesh who
probably can't help me but I can vent to. Please any ideas or direction
would be greatly appreciated here. Thanks again.

Roger

Roger,

There is no checkbox, but there are several settings which can give you the same
effect. If the simplest checks (which were described in the articles) didn't
help, we will dig deeper. With patience and persistence, we can find your
problems. If you read some other threads in this forum, you'll see that this is
better than calling Bangladesh.

Please provide "browstat status" and "ipconfig /all" from each computer (updated
"browstat status" and "ipconfig /all", as we work on this, is always preferred),
as a start. Read this article, and linked articles, and follow instructions
precisely:
<http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/05/troubleshooting-network-neighborhood.html#AskingForHelp>

And always reread the main articles, each time you make any changes.

Thanks Chuck for your help and patience. As the problem is basically with
the XP Home and XP Pro systems, I'm not going to worry about the laptop now
which I use rarely. Something changed with me enabling file sharing with the
Windows XP Pro system and logon. Now the XP Pro system is the Master Browser
and it has an Error = 5 message.

Roger

Roger,

The articles are good sometimes, to point out the most simple things to check.
If you've read thru them, we'll continue with some tests that may help us
diagnose the problems.

Take the following code (everything inside the "#####"). (Please verify computer
names and ip addresses).

1. Open Notepad. Ensure that Format - Word Wrap is not checked. Highlight
then Copy the code (Ctrl-C), precisely as it is presented, and Paste (Ctrl-V)
into Notepad. Verify, and correct, names and addresses if necessary.
2. Save the Notepad file as "cdiag.cmd", as type "All Files", into the root
folder "C:\".
3. Run it by Start - Run - "c:\cdiag".
4. Wait patiently.
5. When Notepad opens up displaying c:\cdiag.txt, first check Format and
ensure that Word Wrap is NOT checked! Then, copy the entire contents (Ctrl-A
Ctrl-C) and paste (Ctrl-V) into your next post.

Do this from both computers, please, with both computers powered up and online.

I've read through your articles and I am not sure how to proceed. What would
you next recommend that I try doing? Thanks so much for your help and
assistance with my problems here.

Roger

Roger,

Actually, having 3 computers makes the job a bit easier.
<http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/08/solving-network-problems-tutorial.html#Four>

But let's give it a shot with the 2 first.

Do this from all computers, please, with all computers powered up and online.

Chuck,

Yes...it's weird that the XP Pro system cannot even see itself. I'm using
Norton Antivirus 2005 (latest updates and definitions). The computer did
come pre-loaded with the McAfee Security Suite (I assume that it had it's
own firewall because Windows was turned off). I uninstalled the McAfee as I
prefer Norton and already owned a spare copy. I have the Windows XP Firewall
turned on. The system has all the latest Windows updates installed
(including SP2). I'm at work now so I will need to check the components and
services you mention in the hyperlink when I get home. I'm 99% sure the
Firewall is setup properly based on my reading of your articles on your
site. What should I try next?

I'm getting ready to re-install the OS at this rate. This is absolutely
unbelievable. I logged onto Dell Chat support last night but because they
feel it's not a hardware problem I would have to use their telephone pay
support for a solution that they do not guarantee. Forget that!

Thanks so much for your time, help and patience.

Roger,

Please start by un installing both firewalls. Totally. Follow all instructions
of each vendor. Then run LSP / Winsock repair.

Are you actually reading all articles?

R

Roger Tregelles

Chuck,

Yes, I have been throughly reading all of the excellent and through articles
you've given me links to. I've tried all of the solutions presented and
checked all of the settings mentioned and still cannot get the problem
resolved. You mentioned uninstalling both firewalls. I only have the Windows
XP firewall currently. I uninstalled the entire McAffee Security Suite some
time ago and I only have the bare bones version of Norton Anti-Virus on my
system without their Firwall. Do you want me to uninstall Norton Anti-Virus
anyway? I've disabled and re-enabled the Windows firewall several times and
no effect. I ran the Windows XP LSP/Winsock program, rebooted the PC and
still nothing. I read another post where it was recommended to run msconfig
and disable all non Microsoft services and perform a selective start up to
see if possibly something being loaded is causing the problem. I'm going to
try that out now. What would you next suggest that I try to remedy my
problem here? Again, thanks so much for your time and help with this.

Roger

Roger,

If you will examine the CDiag output, you will notice but one, symmetric,
symptom. Neither Rogers-P4 nor XPS-GEN4 show XPS-GEN4 in the ad-hoc browse
list. Now, if we had a third computer to run the tests on, we could confirm
this, but with just these two, I have to suspect that there is a problem with
file sharing (the server service) on XPS-GEN4.

When this sort of symptom has been seen in the past, the most common cause is an
LSP / Winsock problem. With the LSP / Winsock corruption problem, there are 6
known solutions, and none of the 6 are known to be 100% effective. And you can
only try one at a time, and when it's fixed, that's it, so no possibility of
comparing solutions to see if one is better than the others. You have to try
all 6, one at a time.

LSP / Winsock problems are generally suspected as being caused by bad software,
such as third party firewalls. Norton Personal Firewall is one known cause of
this problem, though Norton Antivirus (if JUST NAV) is probably not a cause of
this problem.

If it's not an LSP / Winsock problem, then I'd suspect the server service, or
the File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks network component. I would
try the following procedure:
1) Un install the FPSMN component.
2) Restart the system.
3) Un install the drivers for the network card.
4) Restart the system.
5) Install the network card.
6) Restart the system.
7) Re install FPSMN.
8) Restart the system.

Steps 1 and 7 being the essential ones, the others being debatable. Based upon
experience, I would do 1,2,7,8 at minimum.

Chuck,

WooHoo, we finally fixed it! :) I went back and ran the CDiag on my laptop
and it too could not see the XPS-GEN4 system.
I then went and performed all 6 steps for the LSP / Winsock per your website
link in the previous posting. Nothing worked.
Per your latest posting, I uninstalled the FPSMN component, and rebooted the
PC. I then reinstalled the FPSMN component
and rebooted the PC. I needed to Share one of my drives again, and then
rebooted. After all of this, I opened up My Network
Places, clicked on View Workgroup Computers and voila the XPS-GEN4 was
there! I also see it on the other two PC's with
Windows XP Home and can get files from it. Thanks so much for your time,
patience and guidance. I can't say how much I
appreciate your helping me to resolve this problem. Thanks again and keep up
the great work! :)
