xp home accessing windows server 2003 domain resorc.

Brian

Im currently adding a windows 2003 server to a small
business network running xp home edition. User names have
been set up in active directory, with proper rights and
group privledges. However, when I attempt to map the
shares from the domain to the home clients, I run into
the following problems, either:
a) when entering the server address on the
network //Servername/Share --I recieve a message that
this address does not exist
b) when browsing the network I see the domain name,
although it is abbreviated because the domain name is to
long for xp home to display, I click on the domain name
to expand it, but I cannot see any of my shares (or the
specific server for that matter), nor at any time am I
prompted for a user name/password to access this
information.
c)when entering just //Servername/ I recieve the message
that no shares are specified
d)when entering the Fully-qualified domain name, of the
server, I recieve a message that this address does not
exist..yet it appears when browsing
I have configured the user name and password to match
the user name present on the AD.
--I'm aware the problem would easily be solved with xp
pro, but the business owner dosn't wish to upgrade all
the client computers
Thanks for the help,
Brian

As I point out later in my missive, you're making your life a lot harder
than it needs to be, admin-wise, as well as security-wise.

User names have
been set up in active directory, with proper rights and
group privledges. However, when I attempt to map the
shares from the domain to the home clients, I run into
the following problems, either:
a) when entering the server address on the
network //Servername/Share --I recieve a message that
this address does not exist

Well, it would be \\server\share -
b) when browsing the network I see the domain name,
although it is abbreviated because the domain name is to
long for xp home to display,

How long is your domain name?
I click on the domain name
to expand it, but I cannot see any of my shares (or the
specific server for that matter), nor at any time am I
prompted for a user name/password to access this
information.
c)when entering just //Servername/ I recieve the message
that no shares are specified
d)when entering the Fully-qualified domain name, of the
server, I recieve a message that this address does not
exist..yet it appears when browsing

DNS probably not set up right. All servers and workstations should specify
*only* the internal AD-integrated DNS server's IP address in their network
settings. The AD-integrated DNS server should be set up with forwarders to
your ISP's DNS servers for external resolution.
I have configured the user name and password to match
the user name present on the AD.

pro, but the business owner dosn't wish to upgrade all
the client computers

Then he's making a big mistake - penny-wise and pound-foolish. I really
don't see the value of setting a domain up at all if it's going to be
half-___ed and would stick with a workgroup until the money can be found to
upgrade the workstations. If you get licenses through the open license
program (minimum of 5 needed) the cost is lower.
