Can't rename PC on a domain

I have some xp pro pcs I would like to rename as I need to put a pc with a
duplicate name on the network. When I try to rename it prompts for user and
password. I put in the domain administrator user and password and it says
unknown user. Is there a certain whay I should be entering the user in? The
server is reachable otherwise.

Sounds like name resolution issue. If you ping the dc by hostname from the workstation, it reply with the netbios name or FQDN?
