XP hangs during re-install

I am having the same exact problem that Gus below is having. No matter how many times I shut down, it always reboots continuing in setup mode, whether I have the Windows XP CD in the drive or not. If I can get into Safe mode I can do a system restore to a date before I tried the reinstall. Any suggestions?

Initially, it would hang at the 39 minute timeframe of
installing Windows phase ... this was solved by doing a
SHIFT+F10 to get the Command prompt while the error
display was on the background. Then under the \system32
directory I had to rename the \CatRoot2 to \CatOld
directory. Then I re-started ... and did several re-starts
and always during the Finalizing Installation phase it
crawls when Saving Settings ... from the 8 minutes I
stated about an hour ago it now states 7 minutes. I know
this is not right but, don't know what else to do ... and
most likely if it ever finishes the installation I know
there will be further problems later on. The reason why I
installed XP Pro on XP Home was that my PC had become
relatively slow (operating system). We'll see ... I am
happy I still operate Win 98 on my other PC. I have a
network at home and my kid runs XP Home and has not had
problems.

Ray - Also, wanted to comment. That I was not succesfull
to load back via Safe Mode. The PC stated that it could
not re-start in Safe Mode for XP. This was after pressing
F8 key when re-booting.

I too am having this problem. I cannot stop XP trying to
install when the pc is started. Safe Mode will not run
either. At about the 13 minutes to go mark, I get an
error saying 'unregMP2.exe - entry point not found'
Then 'the procedure entry point getIUMS could not be
located in the dynamic link library MSDART.DLL. Setup
will then stop and not go any further - you have to
reboot the pc and the whole thing starts again. Has
anybody got any further pleease??

Here's how I solved this problem. Since I plan on building a new computer soon, I bought a new hard drive, installed it in the computer and disconected the the existing one. I installed XP on this new drive and then reconnected the old drive. I could now access files on this drive and I backed up the important ones to the new drive. I then disconnected the new drive and did a fresh XP install on the old one which was sucessful but wiped out all existing data and files. I then reconnected the new drive and restored the backed up files from the the new drive to the old drive. After removing the new drive and reinstalling some software I'm just about back in business, finally.
