XP filesharing with firewall enabled

Hello

Here is my setup:

Broadband modem connected to wireless router
Windows XP desktop computer connected via wire to router
Laptop XP computer connected wirelessly to router

I want both computers to be able to access internet, and
enable file sharing between both computers.

I have been unable to accomplish this with XP firewall
enabled. I have had to disable XP firewall on both
computers and install software firewall (ZoneAlarm). Now
everything works, but I would much prefer to use
Microsoft XP firewall.

Is there a way to enable file sharing and use XP firewall?

I've tried previously opening filesharing ports and was
able to communicate between desktop and laptop, but not
between laptop and desktop. I'm also concerned about
leaving these ports open.

Anyone have any suggestions or tricks that I might be
able to use?

thanks
Mike

To share files on a LAN with ICF enabled, open the following ports:
TCP 139, TCP 445, UDP 137, UDP 138.

However, if you already have ZoneAlarm running, I'd keep it and not
use ICF. ZA does everything that ICF does and more.

Thanks for your suggestions
- I tried already opening up the ports you listed, and I only got
filesharing working from desktop to laptop, but not the other way around.
- I don't use ICF, just want to enable filesharing
-Zone Alarm works, but my intention is to remove it and use only XP firewall
- From what I understand from users posts, XP SP2 firewall will be able to
operate while using filesharing??

thanks very much

Opening the ports that I listed is only necessary on a network
connection that has ICF enabled.

If you're running ZoneAlarm, put the local subnet into the Trusted
zone.

The Windows Firewall in XP SP2 can create a firewall exception that
allows file sharing on the local subnet.
