XP Explorer Task Pane Other Places links crashes Explorer

Since the very beginning of my Windows XP Pro installation (IBM TP41
distribution), I get a strange behavior when trying to use any of the links
in the 'Other Places' of the Explorer Task Pane. Whenever I press 'Desktop',
'My Computer', or another link in this Task Pane, Explorer hangs. When I
press the close windows button, I get the 'This program is not responding'
dialog and I have to kill Explorer with the End button. I alreday reinstalled
my whole system and I get the same behavior. I also installed a colleage TP41
and I have got the same error. I searched all databses on the net to find
info about the problem but I never found anybody reporting this problem. Is
anybody experiencing the same problems ? Any idea how to fix it ?

Thanks a lot.

David,

See if a shell extension is causing this:

Ignore the title.

Dear Ramesh,

Thank you for your reply. I checked shell extensions but
did not notice any suspect one. Also my computer is clean
from spy and adware (I used updated webroot spysweeper,
spybot and adaware).
Any other idea ?

David,

The Event log might reveal something.

Click Start, Run and type eventvwr.msc
Select Application entry in the left pane
In the right-pane, look for the Error entry denoted by a Red X
Sort by date and track-down the entry based on what time the error exactly occurred
Locate and double-click the entry
Click the copy button at the top and copy the whole event and post it here.
