XP Error message "Bad block"

I have been unable to install Flight Sim X, which is on a DVD.

My system log shows many error entries at the time all of which seem to say
"The device \Device\CdRom0 has a bad block."

Is this a disk fault or a drive fault?

It's a disk fault. Try to make a copy on a friend's DVD burner.

Hi,

Could be that the EIDE cable on that drive is loose, you may want to power
down and reseat it.

Many things could cause that error. The most likely if you don't have
problems with other disks is a bad disk. Other possibilities include, bad
drive, loose/bad data cable, bad ram, weak power supply, and the motherboard
going bad.

I am getting that same error message. This is what happened...
I recently was trouble shooting the game Half Life 2 and Steam, whenever I clicked the game the process just hangs their and does nothing. After doing many things such as downloading updates and getting up to date drivers. I also got a new bios update. I then went into MsConfig and did the selective start up option. And the game started working fine. Couple days later I noticed my dvd drive would not open, and it does not show up in My Computer, Device Manager, or the Bios set up. I also have a regular cd-rom drive that does open, but does NOT show up either. After going through the event viewer I saw this Error:

The device, \Device\CdRom0, has a bad block.

And it came up right after I downloaded an update to my cd rom driver.
Going back to when I installed the cd rom driver update downloaded from
hp.com. I opened and installed it. when it asked me to restart, I did so.
Upon start up it told me that I did not need that driver update and if i
recall correctly i just clicked ok, thinking that it would just erase
anything it had just download for the update. So my question is where did
those drives dissapear to? I can't even find them in the device manager to
see if they are working properly. Can I just go to the manufacturer website
of the cd drive and just download new drivers for the drives? Also the DVD
drive seems to have no power, when you push the button nothing at all
happens, but as for the cd rom drive, when u push the button it does open and
the light blinks but the cd will not show up anywhere. I have windows xp home
edition and have all my MS updates. Please Help, I really don't think it is
a hardware issue, it was working fine a few days ago before all the updating
and troubleshooting I did for that game.
