XP Dialup Networking - can't get further than verifying username and password

I have an old laptop running XPSP2 which seems to work ok but i cannot
connect to the internet via dialup networking. When i connect i get to
"verifying username & password" then it drops out saying error 721 -
the remote computer did not respond.

The pcmcia modem works on another laptop and in this one it will dial
my mobile number so i assume it's ok. The modem is a lucent win modem
and i've just updated to v 8.22.0.0.

I'd imagine this is a PPP problem but does anyone know any way around
it?

The modem did not work prior to SP2. I've also tried several isp's
which all do the same.

I also tried a winsock fix just in case but plugging my broadband in
via usb works fine. (this isn't my laptop if you're wondering why i'd
want to use dialup over broadband :)

Thanks in advance.

it was a problem with the driver if anyone was interested. Curiously a
2002 driver didn't work but a 2000 one did. Search for
lucentwinmodemus.exe
