Dialup Networking Problem - HP Vectra w/win2000k

Hi all,
My aunt has an HP Vectra Desktop PC that is driving me crazy trying to set
it up for internet access. We loaded some software that came from her ISP
onto the pc tonight, and despite numerous attempts on my part to get her
online - including calling customer support - the computer would only get as
far as "Verifying Username and Password" then after about a minute, I'd get
an Error Message 721. The only time it did connect to internet was to
download a table of alternate dialup numbers.

I've checked the PPP setup - its correct, and I've also had windows check
and verify the modem is functional, it returns the proper ATS0 strings with
no "Port is open" indication, so whatelse could be wrong? The modem is a
MSP3880-U and although things seem on the up an up, I'm beginning to think
this is a hardware problem related to modem.

Anyone else having a similar problem?

If you are not sure of the modem being functional you can use hyperterminal
to test your modem.
I live in buffalo NY so I dial to the University of Buffalo's modem when I
do a test, the number is
515-5603.
If you connect useing hyperteminal to another modem you know your modem is
working and the problem lies
elsewhere. Find a modem you can dile to in your area so you wont have to pay
long distance. my area code is 716
if you decide to call the University of Buffalo. 716-515-5603 HTH John G
