XP Defrag quit working

I usually use the Norton defrag utility but today attempted to run the XP
defrag & found that it doesn't respond. The Disk Defrag window displays
correctly but clicking on "analyze" or "defrag" there is no response, &
nothing is displayed in that window showing disk usage. Registry check
shows this service correctly enabled. No other apparent problems. This
happens in safe mode as well. Didn't see anything helpful with a Google
search.

Has anyone experienced this, along with a fix?

Thanks.....Lee

Check in Admin Tools - Services to see if the service has been disabled.
Norton may well have done so. As a general matter it is a bad idea to
mix defrag programs; each will achieve slightly different optimisations,
and they will fight each other.

That said, Norton is really obsolete and does not do the optimisation
job on XP that either the system's inbuilt one does, much less what such
other products as Diskeeper or Perfect Disk do. I would uninstall
Norton, when the inbuilt service should come back into action
