XP: control panel does not open

R

rob

my control panel will not open up. no error messages -
it just hangs and i need to reboot to stop the problem.
i recently added a number of software updates, as well as
some new RAM, so i can't isolate the problem.

from reading other groups i think it's a corrupt .cpl
file, but i don't know how to fix the problem b/c other
sites have not described the problem in XP.

i've tried reinstalling XP on my laptop, but to no
avail. any ideas?

You might want to start by running a virus scan. Be sure your antivirus
software is up to date before running the scan.

If this is a recent issue, you might try using System Restore to take you
back to a time prior to when this began:
Start\All Programs\Accessories\System Tools\System Restore.

Michael-

Thanks for both of your messages. Unfortunately, my
system restore list doesn't go far enough back. I have
also tried running the virus scan and updating all of my
virus software. I'll try Kelly's fix, but do you have
any other ideas?

Thanks for the message. Unfortunately that didn't help
me. It just locks up if I choose control panel from the
start menu or the side nav in "my computer". Any other
ideas?
