XP checks network for local files

Hi,
I have a laptop with Windows XP which is registered as a computer in a group
on the network at work. When I try to open a local file, XP checks the
network first. This is OK at work. But at home with a wireless connection to
the internet, when I try to open a local file, XP tries to check the now
nonexistent network causing a significant delay in opening a local file. Is
there a way to alter this behavior?
Thanks,
Barry Goluboff
