XP Bug?

I am running Windows XP & PPT XP, fully updated with
latest patches. I have .jpgs, .tifs etc. which I am
trying to place in PowerPoint, open in Photoshop, and view
with Windows Explorer. When I try to access the files in
my Shared Documents folder, I get a Microsoft Visual C++
Runtime Library error which reads "Runtime Error!
Program: C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office 10
\POWERPNT.EXE abnormal program termination" The error
varies depending on the application I try to access the
files with. I have also received the error "The
instruction at "0x77f585c9" referenced memory
at "0x000000000". The memory could not be written.
When I move the files out of that folder, I
am able to access the files with no errors. I have this
problem on both of my Windows XP machines (2 different
models)and have not experienced anything like this on my
Windows 2000 machine.
I have checked for viruses, run chkdsk, and defragged. No
problems there. If anyone has seen this before or had
experience with this problem I'd greatly appreciate
hearing from you.

Amy, I don't understand. You're trying to place images in PPT, open them
in PhotoShop, and view with Windows Explorer. You're not trying to do
this all at once, are you?! :)

I think what you're saying is that if you open PPT and use
Insert/Picture/From File, then navigate to those images in that server
folder, you get the error you stated below.

If you open PhotoShop and try to open one of those same image files, you
get a different error, is that correct?

If you open Windows Explorer and navigate to that folder, you get a
different error?

Since moving the files out of that folder lets you access them, I
suspect it's a permissions thing or something with Windows XP.

Thanks for your response, Echo. Yes, you interpreted my
post correctly. I posted on the XP board too. Someone else
there had the same problem & there doesn't seem to be a
solution (yet).

Have you ran "detect and repair"? If not that would be my first move. The
next step would be to defrag the hard drive. (I suspect you may have a
problem with your swap file.)

Hi Austin
Thanks for your reply. Did both, same results. Also wrote 0's to the drive and did a clean restore (Ghost). More of the same. Sending error reports regularly. Next step is installing new video driver
