XP Audio Jump/Skips when playing DVDs

R

I have a Dell Dimension XPS R350 and just upgraded (Clean install) to Windows
XP (Home). I previously had Windows ME loaded on this system and it played
DVDs with out any problems. After installing Windows XP and everything and
loading the system I decided to try to play a DVD. Now the Audio when
playing a DVD or DVD (.vob) files, skips the video picture plays smoothly but
the audio is jumping. This does not happen when playing a avi, mpg, mpeg, or
standard mp3 file only when playing .vob files either from a DVD itself or
from the hard drive. The original sound card is built into the motherboard
and has a Crystal Chipset, I even disabled the crystal audio and inserted a
Sound Blaster 16 card with no improvement. This occures with various DVD
playing programs, MS Media player, Nero Showtime and others. I have swapped
out cables, drives and even CPUs (same speed and specs), with out any
difference. The only thing left to swap out is the Motherboard, totally
different CPU, and memory. This all started due to I installed a Lightscribe
DVD burner and found out that it does not support Windows ME so I installed
XP. Does anyone have any suggestions as to what could be the cause or the
resolution to this? Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.

All the above info doesn't help much. How fast of a processor? How
much system memory? What is the level of Service Pack? Video and audio
drivers fully up to date? All XP patches installed?

Both the on-board and Sound Blaster 16 sound have very poor quality
sound in XP. Sound Blaster 16 drivers are bundled in XP and it is a
16 bit driver.

You mentioned you had reformatted the PC from ME to XP. What are the
hardware specs of your PC?

The hardware specs are as follows.... CPU: Intel P2 350Mhz, RAM:
384MB/PC100, I am running XP Service Pack 3 with all updates installed for
software and hardware. I pulled the Sound Blaster 16 card from another XP
System that plays DVDs with no audio problems, the only difference is the
CPU, Memory and Make of the Motherboard. I have researched out all the
drivers and have updated them all either through the manufactures website or
Driversguide.com

I even changed out the original video card (ATI Rage Pro,8MB) with a Diamond
Stealth 32MB.

I hope this helps. Thanks again.

I don't even know how you got XP to install on that low of a CPU. If
memory serves me, if the processor was under a certain frequency, XP
would refuse to install. In any case, you just don't have the
horsepower to pull it off. You could try and install the K-Lite Mega
Codec Pack 4.3.4 (free) and see if the updated codecs it installs will
be able to squeeze out some better results but don't hold you breath.
it's here if you'd like to try:

The minimum XP requirement is actually 233MHz. Whether it refuses to
install if under that, I don't know, but I doubt it.

My wife used to run XP on a 400MHz. 256MB machine, not very dissimilar
from what he has. It didn't run quickly, but it ran adequately for her
very light needs, and she continually refused my offer to upgrade her
to a more modern and faster computer.

Ok, is that what it was. It's been eons since I had seen that message
or remember what the minimum CPU req's were. I know it was printed on
the box.

XP, stripped pretty bare and with minimal stuff installed, would run
on a 400Mhz but as you say, for lite use. When I come across folks
with old clunkers like that, I tend to point them to or install Linux
distros which I know thrive on these old workhorses.

Your wife must have the patience of Job, Ken. That's even a bit low for
running Win98SE!! (And yeah, I've been "there"). But Win95 would run
like a champ on those specs.

Believe it or not. I have a P1 100mhz with 64mb of Ram and have W2K and Office 2K
installed and running on it. Not very fast but running with no issues. My daughter
who is 12 uses it for learning how to use a computer
